Impatient Optimism
…is the term I learned tonight; a phrase apparently coined by Bill Gates himself. I think I’ve got it.
This drive, this need to move “forward”. I don’t want to be a superstar, I want to be a culture-maker. An icon. I want people to say I inspired them to make their lives a “risky busyness”. Yes. Busyness, not business.
They took advantage of however...

Too Young Die...
I’ve been writing like crazy over the past couple of weeks and that’s the name of my latest song.
Really excited to do it live but having the hardest time recording it. It’s basically about taking advantage of the time we have and having fun. I’ll post soon :-).

A Friendship That Heals...
I’ve experienced a miracle this past weekend. I was in so much pain that all I could do was lay on my futon and involuntarily moan out loud: dizzy, nauseous, weak, cold, and unable to keep down any food or drink…and alone in the smallest studio apartment in NYC. I’d never been so sick in my life. I thought it’d pass by the evening, but my optimism waned after my legs...
Creative Thursdays...
Since 2007, Thursdays have been the days I’ve designated to being creative; and, today has been off to a great start. Just wrote the chorus to what I believe could be a great song. But, idk…this will be the 3rd song I’ve written this week and I’m already giving it the side-eye. I need a small group of people I can let hear my ideas and tell me if I’m really as crazy I...
Who Called the Fashion Police?
It must really suck being a celebrity.
To turn on the TV and see a group of people just picking you apart. No shade on Joan Rivers, since criticism and sarcasm is her hustle; but, I just can’t help but think that there’s something…strange…about our preoccupation with appearances.
I have long—and probably mistakenly—taken pride in trying to access the deeper...

The Other Side of Listening...
The difference between what I said and what was heard is down right fascinating at times. And therein is the difficulty of understanding: entering someone’s world from their own perspective, instead of judging things from our own point of view.
If we could manage to do that—to always try to humbly understand the other—there would be much more peace and success in our relationships. But this is...
An Icon...
and a celebrity are two different things. I just finished watching “Ray” again and I must say that it really gave me much more respect for Ray Charles. I must admit, that I thought people comparing me lately to Ray Charles was pretty wack; because I wasn’t really exposed to his music or his story until very recently. I only hope now that I can be among the names of truly iconic...

One of the Greatest Opportunities in Life...
is to actually be heard. This is something we can take for granted if we’re not careful. To have someone in your life whose basic attitude is “tell me something, anything…I care” is so rare that, when such a person enters our lives, it can be frightening. We want to examine their motives. We want to find their angle. What are they really after? Because we all want to be...
An Ode to My Dream
You are the first thing on my mind in the morning,
and every day I’m constantly thinking of how I will get to you.
I’m all in my head about it; writing plan after plan.
I’m all in my heart about it; pining in my apartment about you.
There are two things I long to do before I die:
to know God, and to hold you.
Every day I work towards that end.
I lose sleep for you. I lose...
I Love Love...
I love the idea: I love talking about it, seeing people in it, writing about it, singing about it, being in it. I love everything about love. I love God’s love, the love shared between friends, the love family has for one another, romantic love. I love seeing love in movies and art and pictures and poetry. I love love…and no matter how many times I “lose” it (if such a...
Can You Be Friends with...
someone you can’t trust? Someone who breaks their word? Someone who flakes on their commitments all of the time?
A Hello from the Video Shoot! If you missed it, you missed out!!

Can I Finish...
please? I mean, dag! I haven’t even gotten the words out of my mouth before someone starts giving their opinion or doling out advice. I understand that most times we’re trying to help. However, sometimes people just need to FEEL understood. I emphasize FEEL, because the reason we cut in on people is because we feel that we’ve already got the point—we already see where...

Listening...
is one of the greatest ways to show someone that you care about them. You can’t love someone you don’t listen to. You may love things about them, you may love being around them, but you can’t love THEM if you won’t really take the time to hear them. The ears are the gateway to the soul; if you can manage to open your ears, it will open your heart, and you’ll find...
Insomniac Songwriter...
The last thing I remember was laying on my back and seeing a solitary star. I’d never seen one like it. I’d seen stars, but I’d never seen one…glimmer. I mean this was BLINKING flashing light. The only star in the entire night sky-at least the only one I could see from my navy blue futon.
And for the first time in a long time, I felt like someone actually gets me.
One More Reason I Love Women...
is because of all of the people who are planning on being at my video shoot this weekend (:-)), the ladies are asking “what should I wear?” No, I really do appreciate that. Good lookin’ out y’all! :-)
Cryin' in the Booth...
I decided that this morning I would record a song…and broke down crying as I sang. I’m gonna’ leave on the record and let the world hear it. It’s called “Don’t Say You Love Me” and I think one thing is clear as I listen: I am not playin’ any games this year. I’m makin’ moves in 2011 and I’m gonna’ help a lot of people once I...
